Hello and welcome to another week of VersaSCARES. If you received this month's Newsletter, you'll know this week is all about upcoming horror films! I am excited for a few on this list and can't wait to share them. September is officially (in my opinion) the start to s p o o k y vibes, so we have to start off the season right!

As you read this, The Conjuring: Last Rites will have been released. What better way to start off September (and this post)! So without further ado, let's begin with what horrors the Warren's will be facing.

The Conjuring: Last Rites

ree

The Conjuring universe has been around for 12 years now. They encompass more than a few haunted houses, focusing on a doll, a nun, and even a malevolent spirit dating back to the 1970s. If you have plans to see this film, watch the trailer here. In this installment, the Warrens (Ed and Lorraine portrayed by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga respectively) must vanquish a demon from yet another family home, but what will it cost?

If you are like me and need a refresher on the universe, you can check out IGN's rundown on how to watch the films chronologically before the anticipation for what's to come in Last Rites. (Again, this film has already released. Run, don't walk, to your nearest theatre to catch this installment,)

The Long Walk

ree

Speaking of walking, The Long Walk is a different take on a dystopic United States. Rather than focusing on the dismantling of authority, the viewer is taken on a literal journey of men who have entered an annual walking contest. The catch is that they must keep at a minimum of 3 miles per hour, otherwise they risk being executed. The trailer reveals that friendships could be forged, but the walk only ends when one person is left alive. Amongst the group of mostly up-and-coming actors, the film stars Mark Hamill (Batman: The Animated Series, Star Wars) and Judy Greer (Halloween 2018, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes).

Fun fact: It is based on Stephen King's 1973 novel of the same name.

You can catch this film in theatres on September 12, 2025.

HIM

ree

I'm personally not much of a sports fan, but all I need to see is "horror" and "Jordan Peele". I will run to the theatre to support his work. Plus a familiar face like Marlon Wayans (The Wayans Bros., Don't Be A Menace) and rising actor like Tyriq Withers (Legacies, The Game, I Know What You Did Last Summer 2025) will be interesting to see in a film that has a more serious tone.

It follows a young up-and-coming football player through his training at an isolated compound belonging to a legendary (and soon-to-retire quarterback). He is forced to endure training like no other as he learns the ins and outs of fame, power, and the complications of striving for excellence.

HIM releases on September 19, 2025 and you can watch the trailer here.

The Strangers - Chapter 2

ree

Last year there was a reboot release of 2008's The Strangers called The Strangers Chapter 1. The second installment in this trilogy is meant to further expand the universe. Madelaine Petsch reprises her role as Maya, the survivor of the events of the previous film. She is forced to survive yet another night of horrors as she is stalked with no answers as to why they are hunting her. It is revealed that they have been connected to a string of senseless murders for a long time, as to be expected. Based on the trailer, it seems as if the events of the night will take place in more than just an isolated cabin in the woods. I wonder how this will truly expand the Strangers and their intentions for what they do.

If you haven't watched the first film in this trilogy, watch its trailer here.

You can also watch the trailer for Chapter 2 here. It is set to release September 26, 2025.

Moment of silence for the next installment in the Saw franchise... Saw XI

ree

Saw XI.... As some of you know, one of my favorite franchises is Saw. They're not all flawless pieces of media, but they're entertaining and we were meant to enjoy the 11th installment on September 26, 2025. It was intended to be a direct sequel to Saw X which could have been exciting. Saw X took us back to when John Kramer (portrayed by the amazing Tobin Bell) tries an experimental treatment for his cancer. Unfortunately, things aren't as they seem and, well, Kramer is forced to "let the games begin".

A direct sequel to the events of that installment would have been interesting to explore especially as Kramer is forced to come to terms with his diagnosis (which, of course, he never does if you have watched the third installment). I am also always interested in what "new" traps we will see and how Kramer's character is further developed.

Anyway, let's take a moment to mourn the installment that could have been.

We've reached the end of this post, but it doesn't mean it has to be the end of the discussion. Comment below and tell me what release you're most excited for. If you aren't a member, feel free to become one to join in on the discussions!

Also, don't forget to subscribe below so that you can receive all updates pertaining to the VersaScares blog. I've recently sent out the blog's first newsletter and plan to make this a monthly update, allowing you ghouls to stay in-the-know about what the month's plan looks like. I also include events that will take place outside of the blog like movie nights or game nights that will happen in the VersaFam Discord server.

Thank you so much for reading today's post and I'll see you next week for a character analysis on Elias (Stack) Moore from Sinners!

Have a wonderful week everyone!
